In the West, much
was written and documented about the German war criminals in
the aftermath of World War II, from epic movies like Judgment
At Nuremburg to volumes of reference books and television
documentaries. But very little is known about Japan's denouement and
the resulting tribunal. Here is an engrossing film told from the perspective
of the Chinese judge.
The actual
Tokyo Trial was an attempt to expose and convict certain Japanese
military leaders of war crimes [against the Chinese during events
like the Nanjing Massacre and inside Concentration Camp 731, as seen
in MEN
BEHIND THE SUN and BLACK
JAIL]. The trial lasted for two and a half years (from May
1946 thru November 1948). The prosecution team consisted of judges
from 11 nations including Australia, Canada, China, France, the UK,
India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Soviet Union
and the United States. When the smoke cleared, they sentenced seven
Class-A War Criminals to the gallows but not before waves of unrest
and violence.
