In
the early '90s, director Daniel Gruener said that he had been "most
influenced by the cinematic talents of Roman Polanski."
Although - officially - this film is based on a 19th century short story,
The Horla, by Guy de Maupassant, it is obviously inspired
by Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. But despite the similarities,
the movie more accurately becomes a homage to REPULSION
punctuated with witches and zombies.
Here
is an intense story of paranoia, isolation and confusion. At one point,
abused Dolores Berthier (Susana Zavaleta) moans: “Sex eradicates
the violence we carry in our blood.” This is perhaps the crux
of Gruener's effective horror film. The movie opens as Dolores witnesses
the brutal murder of neighbor Eva in the hallway outside her apartment.
She is severely traumatized by the vicious assault. Husband Andres forbids
Dolores from leaving their apartment, claiming to be concerned for her
safety. The forced isolation begins to take a toll on the Lolita-ish
young wife as she begins to doubt her own sanity. When she uncovers
a bag containing a strange substance hidden near their bed, Dolores
begins to believe that the killing of her neighbor was not random attack.
Rather, the work of her husband who had been in a secret love triangle.
