This
film is based on the works of Ray Bradbury, most notably the 1950 short
story Veldt (originally published in The Illustrated
Man" and also includes segments from The Dragon,
Marionettes, Inc., The Pedestrian, The
Martian from The Martian Chronicles (1950) and
the episode concerning the death of Colonel Freelya from Dandelion
Wine (1957).
Two
children receive a gift from their parents, an all-encompassing electronic
game. Via gigantic television screens, Peter and Wendy lose themselves
for days in the African veldt and watch with excitement as lions
devour antelopes. They begin to consider a plan for the lions to kill
mom and dad. Meanwhile, strange things take place outside the house:
An atmosphere of hostility is forming and the citizens are unsettled
by the materialization of ghosts and dreaded memories…
Here
is easily the darkest of any Ray Bradbury cinematic adaptation. Perhaps,
it is more emblematic of the dying days of Russia with emphasis on a
crumbling Soviet Union, symbolically set upon the Bradbury canvas.
