Delicious. Is there a better way to describe these two movies from master filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku? Divinely delicious. Renowned transvestite Akihiro Maruyama is 'Black Lizard,' the brilliant female boss to a gang of criminals. She has planned a double-pronged caper: the theft of the 1.2 million dollar diamond Star of Egypt and the kidnapping of the jeweler's pretty daughter Sanae. But Black Lizard is foiled at every turn by an equally brilliant detective Kogoro Akechi [an endearing character from legendary writer Edogawa Rampo]. Eventually the robbery transpires and Sanae is captured by Black Lizard, who then reveals her master plan of killing Sanae and adding her to a zombie 'doll museum' under the mansion (!).

After the tremendous success of BLACK LIZARD, Shochiku Studios quickly brought Fukasaku and Maruyama back for a sequel, BLACK ROSE MANSION. In this film - after a bank-job gets horribly botched - a gangster goes on the lam, taking refuge inside an old haunted mansion. There, he meets Madam Black Rose [Black Lizard] with decidedly disastrous results.

Both films stand as true monuments of Japanese cinema. Stylishly bizarre. Exquisitely perverse. Pop-art chic from one of the country's most respected filmmakers, Kinji Fukasaku. Sadly, Mr Fukasaku would die at age 72 in January 2003, from prostate cancer, shortly after directing BATTLE ROYALE. An exclusive interview with Kinji Fukasaku was published in Asian Cult Cinema magazine #17.
