A MATTER OF INNOCENCE
also known
as PRETTY POLLY and HEIRESS OF SINGAPORE [L'héritière de Singapour]
(French title)
director: Guy Green
starring Hayley Mills · Trevor Howard · Shashi Kapoor · Kalen Lui ·
Brenda de Banzie
Young
Polly Barlow agrees to accompany her eccentric aunt on a voyage to Singapore.
After Aunt Eva unexpectedly passes away, Polly is left alone to pursue
her new freedom. She soon meets several men and - for the first time
- finds romantic love with a charming gigolo/escort.
Loosely
based on the Noel Coward short story Pretty Polly. Coward
strongly disliked director Guy Green's interpretation of his story,
writing in a syndicated column that "Guy Green should have stayed
a cameraman." [In reality, while it's true that Green had been
a cinematographer for filmmaker David Lean, by this time, he had become
an accomplished director, winning major awards the previous year for
A Patch of Blue.]
This
film is exactly what it's supposed to be: A coy coming-of-age movie
for Disney-fied Hayley Mills, who was no longer a 14 year old virgin
(a perennial condition that stretched a decade from The Parent
Trap to That Darn Cat). This film was advertised
as "Hayley Mills isn't the girl you thought you knew" [Hint.
Wink. Hint]
