A teenage
girl gains supernatural power after a cosmic accident and comes to understand
her place in the universe. Izumi is diving champion at her high school.
She has an incident in mid-air (seemingly caused by a double meteorite
strike in the forest near the school) and Izumi becomes comatose. Her
coma continues as the city falls under the grip of a drought and an
unknown disease that afflicts the citizens randomly. When she wakes
from the coma, Izumi speaks of aliens, nature and communication. She
is a different person. Even her personality has changed. Somehow she
is then connected to a strange murder in the forest.
Sogo
Ishii's film is an imaginative pseudo-scientific fantasy that punctuates
his most prolific period, a collection of masterworks from the '90s
including ANGEL
DUST, LABRINTH
OF DREAMS, GO
JOE: SPIRIT WAR and ELECTRIC
DRAGON 80,000 vt. Many critics say this is his best film, but
it is not an easy-to-follow linear adventure. Envision if David Lynch
had directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
