original Vietnamese title BUI DOI CHO LON [Dust
of Life: Cho Lon]
director: Charlie Nguyen
starring Johnny Nguyen · Bich Phuong Huynh · Ha Hien ·
Long Dien · Hoang Phuc Nguyen
At
the heart of this film is a Vietnamese retelling of the Helen
of Troy story featuring youth gangs in Saigon. An interesting
idea from director Charlie Nguyen and younger brother Johnny Nguyen,
the same team that delivered the extraordinary actioner THE
REBEL in 2007. This one is more intense, more violent, causing
it to be banned for release when the Vietnam Cinema Department refused
to allow the film to be shown in any theater. It failed censorship approval
due to the graphic depiction of gang violence and vulgar language.
The
main conflict - which leads to a breathtaking extensive gang war - deals
with Huong (beautiful Bich Phuong Huynh playing the 'Helen' role)
in love with Lam (Ha Hien as 'Paris') but suffers the jealous
obsession from his older brother Hung Dao (Long Dien, 'Hector').
For those familiar with the Trojan War story, there's also Johnny Nguyen
playing Phong Bui (the pivotal Achilles role). But more is at
stake than this love triangle, there is also a death-war for control
over lucrative drug trafficking throughout the Cho Lon district of Saigon.
A
