Here
is an Indonesian film based on the Internationally successful Turkish
horror movie SICCIN
(2014). In a similar story, a young woman turns to black magic in
an effort to secure a forbidden love. In this film, teenager Irma (Anggika
Bolsterli) is madly 'in love' with her first cousin Galang. But despite
the societal guilt, Irma is young and headstrong. She goes to a dark
shaman named Iqsan for advice. He tells her not to pursue this love
as the man would be the cause of her death. Fast forward 10 years, Galang
is now married to a woman named Nisa. They have a child. However, he's
also currently in an affair with Irma and she is pregnant. When he tries
to end relationship, a fight ensues and Irma has a miscarriage. Filled
with hatred, she returns to the black magic shaman and demands to
"be the only woman in Galang's life," arranging a blood
curse that will summon a demon from Sijjin (Hell) to eliminate Nisa
and her entire bloodline.
Yes. Like the original Turkish film, this one is dark and gory, punctuated
by Islamic religious overtones [maybe 'anti-religious' is more
accurate] but veteran Hadrah Daeng Ratu's cinematic style is a bit more
fluent and - ultimately - more engaging for Western audiences. The success
for this Indonesian movie has already spurred a sequel called BOOK OF
SIJJIN AND ILLIPPIN (2026).
